Mild postpartum haemorrhage uterine subinvolution,under full obstetric supervision to shorten 3rd stage of labour following delivery of anterior shoulder routine mgt after delivery of placenta;postpartum or postabortal atony and haemorrhage
Coronary insufficiency, first stage of labor, peripheral vascular disease, sepsis, impairment of hepatic and renal function.
Sepsis, hypertension, obliterative vascular disease.
Beta -blockers, methysergide, smoking: Risk of vascular occlusion increased.
Erythromycin: Increased plasma concentration of ergotamine.
Oral contraceptives: Increased risk of thrombosis.
Adults: Active management of 3rd stage of labour: Oral: Ergotab: 300-540mg after 3rd stage of labour. Thereafter 150-270mg thrice a day. I.V.: 0.1 to 0.2mg slowly
Uterine atony / haemorrhage: 0.2mg I.M. or 0.1 to 0.2mg I.V., may be repeated at intervals of not less than 2 hours. Subinvolution, lochiometra, puerperal bleeding: Oral : 0.125 to 0.25mg Injection: 0.1 to 0.2mg S.C. or I.M., upto 3 times daily. In lactating women preferably not longer than 3 days.
